Time off should be guilt-free

I take a deep breath and think, wow, a week off. A week to relax. After what feels like hours of packing and organizing, we hit the road. An hour in and the kids are fighting. Trips with families are wonderful, but they aren’t work free. It’s just a different kind of work.

Remembering this from the past my husband and I decided to spend a couple nights away at a cabin. It was great, but then I felt that other feeling creep in. Here I was finally off work and I was spending time without my kids. Guilt. That ugly feeling. I named it. I then looked it head on and said you don’t belong here.

My kids had fun with grandparents, my in-laws had fun with the kids and my husband and I enjoyed ourselves. That’s the focus. The good. Not my unwarranted self-proclaimed failures.
Still it’s tough for me. I know some of you will think “get over it.” But I also know some of you will think, I feel that too.

This is for those out there like me. Those who worry they aren’t giving enough but sometimes feel they can’t give more. Instead of focusing on what you’re not giving, be present and proud of the relationship/responsibility you’re committing to in that moment. Then move onto the next with a refreshed smile on your face.
